The Fruitful Vine Robert Hichens 1911 First American Edition Antique Novel
American Vintage
1911 antique hardcover novel, first American edition, Frederick A. Stokes, New York. 7.5 x 5.25 inches, 524 pages. The Fruitful Vine by Robert Hichens was first published September 1911, and this is the scarce Frederick A. Stokes first American edition, identified by the publisher's date stamp on the copyright page. A novel of Roman society, marriage, and desire set against the backdrop of early 20th century Rome, this is Edwardian fiction at its most atmospheric. What you are getting: the original green cloth boards with blind-stamped vine decoration and gilt lettering. The color frontispiece The Eternal City by illustrator Jules Guérin is present with tissue guard. Two pieces of period ephemera were found tucked inside, a clipping from The Detroit News and a vintage 25 cent Aladdin Knife Sharpener coupon, both consistent with the era. There is an owner inscription on the front endpaper (H. Beukert). No dust jacket. Condition: Good. The green cloth shows age-appropriate wear including corner bumping, minor staining to the rear board, and a small ink mark on the spine. Interior pages are tanned and show typical foxing. The rear hinge is cracked but the binding remains intact. The text block is complete and readable throughout. To care for your antique book, store it upright on a shelf away from direct sunlight and humidity, and avoid stacking heavy items on top. Sarah / The Storied House Co.
