About the Artist:
Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939)
A Czech painter and decorative artist. His Czech name is pronounced Mucha.
After studying in Vienna and Munich, he moved to Paris in 1888. In 1894, he created a life-size poster for the actress Sarah Bernhardt's play Gismonda. He then signed a six-year contract with Bernhardt and designed numerous posters, including Medea and La Dame aux Camélias. He also created original drawings for posters such as Job Cigarette Papers and Cassandre, as well as designs for book covers, packaging, and jewelry. His imagery, featuring idealized women adorned with decorative, flowing lines of plants, is considered iconic of Art Nouveau culture. In 1910, he returned to Prague and dedicated himself to painting, including his monumental work, The Slav Epic.
